Chernobyl Disaster Strikes

Chernobyl, or Chornobyl, is the name of a city located in northern Ukraine near the border with Belarus. Chernobyl was largely abandoned after the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is 14.5 km (9 miles). Ukraine was part of Russia on April 26, 1986, when the disaster occurred. The city is now within 30 km of Exclusion Zone, which surrounds the nuclear power plant. Prior to its evacuation, Chernobyl was inhabited by 16,000 people, but is now only populated by Zone administrative staff, some of them involved in the decommissioning of power stations and a number of residents who refused to leave their homes or subsequently returned.
